The VideoLAN team is happy to announce version 1.2.0 of libdvdcss,
a portable DVD access library. This release fixes a grave crash which
could occur on certain DVDs, and adds a few stability enhancements.

The official libdvdcss page is:

http://www.videolan.org/libdvdcss/

You can download 1.2.0 via HTTP or FTP:

http://www.videolan.org/libdvdcss/download.html
ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/libdvdcss/1.2.0/

Debian x86 packages and RPM x86 packages are available. Builds for
other architectures are welcome.

For the VideoLAN team,
Sam.

I'm sorry to interrupt, but what do we do for the users who have
problems with drives whose region isn't set ? Is there a patch in the
works ? Should we switch again the default method to "title" instead
of "key" and release 1.2.1 ? I think we must do something quickly.

BTW, is anyone working on the CSS title key cache ?

I've alredy done a patch for it. I see that I only sent it to
libdvdcss-user though. I don't have a RPC-II myself to test with.
(Or make a tool to help people check / set the region).

I haven't had time to look at it. I'm a bit worried how it will deal with
loose files (i.e both single vobs and remotely mounted DVDs).

I've got some thought about teh API in general too.. I'm wondering if
one shoudln't expose a bit more to the caller. Like wether it's fast to
get the keys or not, if there actually is any CSS protection at all.
Possibly region information too.

Hmm. That's an interesting point... Currently it uses a method seen in
libdvdread to get a serial number from the DVD. This doesn't seem too
likely to work for standalone VOBs (hopefully it should fail on the
attempt to read the serial number and hence disable the cache).

The problem is, we need a unique identifier for the disc/file/stream if
we're to cache its keys - otherwise how do we recognise it when we see
it again? So if a naked VOB doesn't contain any sort of identifier,
short of md5sum-ing the whole file, I can't see any way for a cache to
recognise it.

Well, I've posted a patch here to do just that. Please feel free to let
me know of any problems/enhancements, and I'll get them sorted.
