Hello,
I'm trying to figure out this problem. It seems to have something to do
with libdvdcss though I can't be certain. I'm hoping someone here has
some ideas though.
I bought a new LG GDR-8162B DVD-rom to replace a Samsung drive that
worked, but skipped a little too often. Now, with the new drive, I get
all sorts of errors reading DVDs. CDs seem to work just fine though.
If I just load up xine, with verbose output, I get the following when I
try to play the DVD (after a lengthy period of time - about 30 seconds):
===================================================================
xine_stream_new
xine_dispose
shutdown audio
shutdown video
gui_xine_open_and_play():
mrl: 'dvd:/',
sub 'NONE',
start_pos 0, start_time 0, av_offset 0, spu_offset 0.
xine: found input plugin : DVD Navigator
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1-rc5 from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access
libdvdcss debug: opening target `/dev/dvd'
libdvdcss debug: using libc for access
libdvdcss debug: disc is scrambled
libdvdcss debug: requesting AGID
libdvdcss debug: drive authenticated, using variant 0
libdvdcss debug: authentication established
libdvdcss error: ioctl ReadDiscKey failed
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading
libdvdnav: vm: faild to open/read the DVD
input_dvd: Error opening DVD device
xine: input plugin cannot open MRL [dvd:/]

Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist.

Also, the following two lines appear in kern.log:
ide-cd: cmd 0xad timed out
hdc: lost interrupt
Also, if I try using tstdvd (from css-auth) I get the following (after
another long pause):
not Authenticated
Request AGID [1]... AGID 0
Host sending challenge: 09 08 07 06 05 04 03 02 01 00
LU sent key1: FD 14 D4 74 2A

Host sending key 2: A2 71 3F 5A B9
DVD is authenticated
Received Session Key: 12 1D 07 16 16
not Authenticated
Could not read Disc Key
not Authenticated
and the same two lines in kern.log.
I've flashed the firmware to an autoreset firmware (reset to no region,
and 5 more resets on each reboot) and set the region to 1 each time, but
it seems that it's behaving as if the regions don't match or something.
Could it actually be a hardware issue? The 'lost interrupt' implies
that, but it's very strange that it only happens when reading the
encrypted information. If I remove libdvdcss and run xine, I get no
errors - just the expected one about the disc being encrypted.
One other thing - if I mount the CD, and try to copy files from it
directly, it works fine until I get to the .vob files. They fail with
"cp: reading `/cdrom/video_ts/vts_05_1.vob': Input/output error"
and a whole pile of stuff like the following ends up in kern.log:
Sep 20 23:07:49 redowl kernel: hdc: command error: status=0x51 {
DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Sep 20 23:07:49 redowl kernel: hdc: command error: error=0x54
Sep 20 23:07:49 redowl kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector
413568
Sep 20 23:07:49 redowl kernel: Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical
block 103392
Any idea what might be happening here? I'm open to just about any
possibility at this point! Thanks a lot....
